A Special Project for Bennett’s Beavers was to produce boats for Ted & Jane’s Camp Courage. Ted & Jane’s Camp Courage is an overnight camp for children and teens ages 6 -17 who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life. The staff of Camp Courage have planned the camp experience to be a fun-filled weekend, yet one which will help each camper to understand, express and share their feelings of grief.
Children who attend stay in cabins with others of similar age and same gender. Each child is assigned an adult “Buddy” who will provide a listening ear, careful supervision throughout the weekend and a friendly face at each activity. Registered nurses and counselors are also available on site at all times. Through a variety of guided activities, children will have an opportunity to express their grief. There will also be opportunities for the campers and Buddies to explore the many camp and sport activities. The staff of Camp Courage has expressed their gratitude to Bennett’s Beavers for the boats and how this is one of the most important activity of the camp, honoring and remembering the family and friends the kids have lost
Camp Courage provides a refuge for youth to share their grief with peers through fun nature activities and is held at the Howell Conference & Nature Center in Howell, MI. Thanks to St. Joseph Mercy Hospice along with the generous support of the Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation, and donations from community members, there is no cost to the family for this camp experience.
Camp Activities include:
- Memory sharing
- Swimming, zip line and other outdoor activities
- Arts, crafts and music
- Candle light lake memorial service
